Stride was certain he and Étienne were walking in circles. It reminded him of the time he and Zero had been on Planet X, walking in deep snow past the same street over and over again. He still felt his mother could never suffer enough for the pain and damage she had caused Zero.

He held a fleeting thought, a sudden fear that Tressa might fall victim to the Vampire Queen’s power and be tempted to liberate her. No. He was being foolish. The underworld was enjoying being allowed to torture the hateful old witch.

“We’re lost, aren’t we?” he asked. He had the distinct feeling that Étienne was deliberately stalling, trying to buy time.

“No,” Étienne said, “I know the way. I just can’t find the entrance.”

Stride focused on reading the Grigori angel’s mind and sensed confusion and fear. Étienne was telling him the truth.

“How long has it been since you were there?” Stride asked, keeping his tone soothing and calm.

“A long time.” Étienne kept picking his way over moss-covered stones in a creek bed of rippling, cool water. It was silent and wonderful, but Stride’s thoughts flew to Zero and Akakios. He would much rather be experiencing this piece of paradise with them. How he rued all the times he and Zero had argued or when he’d turned his back on Zero in furious silence.

He loved Zero and was surprised at the euphoric sensation the knowledge gave him. He loved his son, too, and decided he could put up with anything if he kept them in his mind and heart.

If he saw them as being his final prize.

“You know,” Étienne said, intruding on his thoughts, “angels are notorious for losing their way back to Heaven. That’s how I got in trouble last time.”

“What do you mean?” Stride was beginning to get a bad feeling about this.

“Do you know anything about Heaven?”

“I know I could stand to spend some time in it.”

Étienne let out a sigh. “In the beginning of mortal time, God sent down twelve angels to help the human population. It is said that these angels soon lost track of time, not to mention their mission. They fell in love, had sex…discovered mortal life.”

“I would assume that angelic beings having a human experience would be part of the process,” Stride said, wondering why Étienne was telling him all this. He didn’t mind if it got them a step closer to the alleged pearly gates of Heaven, but Étienne seemed in no hurry to keep looking for it.

“That’s true,” the angel said. “But as they began to have sex and father children, their power became diluted. I’ve heard that God was patient”—he gestured at Stride—“while they had what you call the human experiences, except some of the angels fell into darkness. God sent more angels hoping they could restore the balance between good and evil and retrieve the lost angelic souls…” Étienne’s voice trailed away and he shrugged.

Stride let out a derisive laugh. “That was his grand plan? Looks like he failed.
